United Kingdom - Landmark High Court ruling on misleading promotions

On 2nd February 2011, the Office of Fair Trading won a landmark High Court ruling that promotions distributed by the companies and individuals behind five UK prize draw promotions were in breach of the UK Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 (CPRs). The businesses and individuals had promoted various premium-rate prize draw scratch-cards thorugh inserts in magazines and newspapers, as well as direct mailings, and had misled consumers about the nature of the promotion, the geographical origin of particular products and the costs to consumers of calling a premium number to find out what they have won.
